I started working as the lead writer and editor at Nokia Software in October 2020. In January 2021, this business group was folded into Cloud and Network Services. In July 2022, I moved over to the Strategy & Technology function and specifically to Bell Labs. As the primary storyteller for all these organizations, my goal has been to shape the industry narrative and frame thinking around technology trends and approaches – while also providing insight into the products and people behind it all. My personal mission is to try to understand technology better and make it more accessible to the masses.
Five years before Brooklyn Dodgers legend Jackie Robinson famously broke baseball’s color barrier, becoming the first African American to play in the Major Leagues, another future Hall of Famer scored a similar, though far less publicized, breakthrough. In 1942, chemical…
Before turning off your QLED TV tonight, or the bedside lamp powered by electricity generated from sunlight captured in solar cells, please take a moment to remember Louis E. Brus. These everyday amenities would not be possible without his groundbreaking…
The year 2025 marks the halfway point between the 5G and 6G eras of wireless communications. It’s a milestone symbolizing the bridge between the groundbreaking 5G technologies that were unleashed at the start of this decade and the promise of…
When ChatGPT burst into the scene in late 2022, it dazzled the world with how Artificial Intelligence could generate human-like text, code and conversation. But it very quickly revealed its limitations and weaknesses, namely hallucinations, mathematical challenges, brittleness and decision-making…
For the past 30 years, Nokia Bell Labs optical researcher Sébastien Bigo has been a near-constant presence at the annual European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC). In fact, since 1995, he has missed only a single edition of Europe’s most…
We are living in an era in which cognitive robots are becoming commonplace in factories, warehouses and other challenging environments. They offer an autonomous solution that often is safer and more productive than manual labor. The technology behind this is…
If you have ever taken a selfie on your smartphone or gotten an X-Ray from your doctor or dentist, you have George E. Smith to thank. Smith, together with his close Bell Labs colleague and friend Willard S. Boyle, invented…
It is already conventional wisdom that artificial intelligence is rapidly affecting our lives and upending the way we work. But it’s also clear that the impact of AI will vary from place to place, community to community. With the potential…
In the never-ending race to meet the insatiable global demand for communication, optical transmission researchers have an overriding objective: speed. Our global communications infrastructure is powered by high-capacity fiber optic cables and Nokia Bell Labs has been at the forefront…
When AT&T and Western Electric officially created Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1925, the world was on the cusp of a technological revolution. There were no televisions, transistors or transoceanic telephone cables. There were no communications satellites, cellular networks or high-speed…
One of the more widespread concerns of the looming era of artificial intelligence is how it will impact the traditional job market. Fears have been rampant on how it could make many blue-collar jobs obsolete, with robots replacing those in…
With the changing autumn weather of New York City as a backdrop, some of the most creative minds in the communications industry gathered to mark an equally dramatic transition in their field. As the wind picked up and the falling…
